How to use
Wet hair thoroughly. Massage a small amount into your scalp, lather and rinse. Then shampoo a second time, and this time give your scalp a full one-minute massage with your fingertips before rinsing. That second wash is where the real cleansing and stimulation happen. Follow with Awaken Therapeutic Conditioner. You'll feel a cool, warming tingle, which is normal and comes from the menthol and capsicum.
Building your hair & scalp routine
The Awaken collection is designed to work together:
- Cleanse with Awaken Therapeutic Shampoo, washing twice.
- Condition with Surface Awaken Therapeutic Conditioner, which uses the same capsicum and menthol plus vegan proteins.
- Exfoliate once a week or as needed with Surface Awaken Scalp Detox after shampooing.

Esthetician tip

Why does my scalp tingle?
That's the capsicum and menthol. Most people find it refreshing. A mild tingle is normal, but if your scalp burns, itches or turns red, rinse well and stop using it.
Will this regrow my hair?
It's a cosmetic shampoo designed to cleanse and stimulate the scalp, not a hair loss treatment. If you're noticing sudden or significant shedding or bald patches, please talk with your doctor or a dermatologist.
Can I use it every day?
Yes, it's gentle enough for regular use. How often you wash depends on your scalp. Oily scalps usually like more frequent washing, while drier scalps do well every two or three days.
Is it safe for color-treated hair?
Surface describes its Awaken shampoo as sulfate free, which many people with color-treated hair prefer. If you've just had a color service, ask your stylist when to start any stimulating scalp products.
Why wash twice?
The first wash breaks up oil and product. The second lathers more fully and reaches the scalp, which is where you want the stimulating ingredients to work.
How much should I use?
A small amount, roughly the size of a quarter, is enough for most hair lengths. Because you wash twice, you may need a little less on the second round since your hair is already clean and lathers more easily.
